Making decisions is exhausting; the constant choices we face deplete our mental energy. And it’s not just deciding what we should do that’s tiring. Deciding what we shouldn’t do is equally debilitating. According to numerous studies, our quality of decision-making deteriorates over the course of the day, resulting in decision fatigue. Research by the University of Würzburg* explains that we spend three to four hours a day resisting desires, from checking Facebook when we’re meant to be working , to laying in bed when we promised we’d get up early to meditate.
