Doom: The Dark Agesis now out and we’ve got an earlier game on our cover, so it feels like the perfect time to revisit id Software’s seminal first-person shooter. Tim, Nick and Darran recall their experiences with the series.
DARRAN
What was your first experience with the original Doom?
NICK
It must have been at a PC-owning friend’s house, but I’m not sure who it would have been. What I do know for sure is that I was ‘too young’ to be seeing it.
TIM
I first played Doom on a friend’s PC, it was a significant step up from Wolfenstein 3D which I’d sneakily played in college when I should have been learning how to program in Fortran and Pascal of all things.
DARRAN
Mine was seeing it on Mark Catterall’s 486 and I thought it was astonishing. What was the first system you played Doom on and did it live up to the hype?
NICK
It would have been the PC for me, and it was incredible there. The first system I actually owned it on was the Saturn, and that version was super disappointing because it chugs so badly.
