Twelve months ago, I should have written here about arriving, as we do now, on the eve of rowing’s biggest prize. The jewel in any rower’s crown; the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. In this parallel universe, with no Covid-19, I would have almost certainly said that we were set for perhaps the most unpredictable Olympic regatta in living memory. That for the first time in a long time, no country will go into the Games having managed to maintain an undefeated run in any boat class between Rio and Tokyo. I would have said that across the board there are no dead certs for Tokyo.
