ACQUIRE
Words by Sam Desatoff
Sid Sackson’s Acquire is a modern masterpiece by any measure. It may not have earned the audience Monopoly enjoys, but it is no less classic. A game about managing and merging competing hotel chains, Acquire calls for savvy speculation and well-timed play. The realestate theme may echo Monopoly’s, but the two are wildly mechanically different. Where Monopoly is reliant on the luck of a dice roll, Acquire offers more agency to the player. There is an element of luck with how tiles are drawn, but after that it’s up to you to bide your time, wisely invest and wait until the right moment to merge the two chains in which you own the most stock.
