The Souk, watercolour on Arches Rough 140lb (300gsm),121⁄2×181⁄2in (32×47cm). This is a painting about suggestion rather than over statement
What do you want to paint? This is a very big question, and one that I prefer to think of as ‘how do you want to paint?’ Some artists choose to be abstract or design orientated, others prefer representational and impressionistic. Whilst one painter may go for mood and atmosphere, another will concentrate on detail and super realism. The more I work, the more I seem to be driven toward colour and light; I suppose I am a painter of light, which actually means I am a painter of shadows to create light.
This article looks at some of my approaches to capturing light through extreme use of shadows, in both daytime and night-time subjects. A good strong quality of light is essential when deciding which subject to paint, and the paintings here are from the continent, where the light is much stronger than in the UK.
