How to paint silver

The Untitled Volume, acrylic, 121⁄2x101⁄4in (32x26cm).

The decanter is almost pure silver laid over a heavy glass moulding. It drives me insane when I have to keep rubbing out to redraw a pattern like this. As ever the outline was drawn precisely and the wine painted inside the decanter; the pattern was then drawn over a day and a half and underpainted in a mixture of white, cobalt, raw sienna and burnt umber, depending on how dark I wanted it; then I began turning it into silver. There are many edges to catch the light and internal reflections, and it’s observing those that creates the illusion. A very time-consuming painting but so rewarding
