Britain’s ambassador to the EU, Ivan Rogers, unexpectedly resigned last week, lifting the lid on growing tensions between Downing Street and the civil service over Brexit. In a leaked valedictory email to staff, Rogers accused
Theresa May and her ministers of still not knowing what they wanted to achieve in the forthcoming negotiations. He urged his colleagues to continue offering “unvarnished” advice and to stand up to “muddled thinking”. Rogers was backed by a string of both serving and former civil servants, who voiced their own criticisms of the Government. Brexit supporters hit back, accusing Rogers and others of trying to frustrate the democratic process.
