If you’re vegan and enjoy a pint of beer, going to the pub can open the proverbial can of worms. It’s often easier if you enjoy lager, with many of the ones produced by the macro breweries being vegan-friendly. Coors, Budweiser, San Miguel, Grolsch, Stella Artois and Heineken are all suitable, with the main ones to avoid being Kronenbourg 1664 and Fosters. If, however, you’re a traditional cask ale devotee — those beers that are served at cellar temperature via a hand pump — things become more challenging…
Sadly, the majority of traditional British cask beer is not suitable for vegans. The primary reason for this is that these are fined using a substance called isinglass that is derived from the swim bladders of certain species of fish. Fundamentally this is done for the purpose of appearance, to make the beer appear clearer.
