“I’ve always been a lone wolf when it comes to running”
COVER STAR
Mary Menon is no stranger to a bit of hard work. In fact, the 39-year-old mother of two (to Alice, 8, and Ferdy, 6), who works part-time as a professional groom, states this is the reason her running has gone from strength to strength in recent years. “I’m quite good at suffering!” she laughs. “I just get stuck in and keep going.” This mentality has certainly served her well when it comes to training and racing. Mary has placed as first woman in the North Devon Marathon for five successive years; has some highly impressive PBs across all distances; and recently became the first woman to win Race To The Tower (a Threshold Trail Series event) outright.
“I do take my running quite seriously, ” Mary says, as we chat about her recent form. “I mean, obviously it’s fun and it’s a hobby, but on race day I’m taking it seriously and I’m sensible about it. Sometimes things don’t go right during a race, but I just keep at it, and I think that makes a big difference.
