MUIR IN THE RUNNING FOR TITLE
UK track star nominated for Female World Athlete of the Year 2020
We’re brimming with pride for Scottish runner Laura Muir, whose achievements stood out on the global stage this year, despite the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Laura was undefeated in three 1500m races this summer and ran a worldleading 3:57.40 over the distance. There are 10 nominees for Female World Athlete of the Year, all selected by an international panel of experts, comprising representatives from all six continental areas of World Athletics.
Other nominees included Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey, who set a world record of 14:06.62 over 5000m, Sifan Hassan, Netherlands, who ran a record time of 18,930m in the one-hour run and a European record of 29:36.67 over 10,000m (the fourth fastest performance in history), Peres Jepchirchir, Kenya, who won the world half marathon title and twice broke the world half marathon record for a women-only race (1:05:34 and 1:05:16) and Ababel Yeshaneh, Ethiopia, who also broke the world record in the half marathon with 1:04:31.
