Use repetitive sounds to bring out the mood of your poem, advises Doris Corti
Observation, perception and imagination are things that we choose to use when writing poems. We possibly write from something we have seen, something analysed through such observation or from something imagined. Whatever is the trigger, try to handle thoughts and images with precision. A Chinese philosopher, Wei T’ai, said ‘poetry presents the “thing” in order to convey the feeling. It should be precise about the thing and reticent about the feeling.’
This does not mean that poetry should be obscure. It means handling thoughts and images with precision. Be precise about how the lines of a poem sound.
