Gill and Simon Skeffington bought a 1980s bungalow in Cheltenham which was in such poor condition everyone recommended they demolish and build afresh. But architect Simon knew he could make it work. ‘A lot of space was wasted so it needed reconfiguring,’ he says and he did most of the work himself to modernise it. The kitchen was especially grim with a collapsed ceiling, black mould everywhere, an old boiler, pine units, a Formica worktop, a grease-covered gas cooker and a tiled floor. ‘It was just unusable,’ he says.
