SAGA CONTINUES

A year ago, Diesel World magazine published a Q&A with Rich, a Duramax owner whose 2009 truck was producing frequent P0087 trouble codes while towing heavy in summer heat. In the Q&A, I mentioned the causes and the usual solutions for this problem, which included an ECM program change that allows the computer to be more tolerant of acceptable fuel rail pressure variations. Typically, a P0087 is caused by worn fuel injectors and the system’s inability to maintain a fuel rail pressure called for by the computer. Replacement injectors cost thousands of dollars, and the truck usually runs normally without producing trouble codes during all other types of driving, which makes it harder to make the decision to spend all that money.
