In truth I wanted a weekend with my partner as well as my Frenchie but let’s not split dog hairs. Pooch pampering website PetsPyjamas (petspyjamas.com/travel) was my first port of call: their high-end pet accessories and attention to detail suggested the dogfriendly hotels featured on their website would fit the bill. Within minutes I’d found what I was looking for.
STAY
South Lodge is a 5 star hotel located on the edge of West Sussex’s rolling South Downs. Nestled within 93 acres of grassy gardens and woods, with a secret lake, this luxury bolthole gave us a room larger than the average two-bedroom London flat. With an enormous bathroom, Jaccuzzi bath and double shower, a four-poster bed, surround-sound flat-screen TV, couches, desk and a patio garden that looked onto the abundant lawns, we felt like new arrivals in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Liliput. At the grand reception desk we were welcomed by friendly staff – our pooch was, of course, given an extra special welcome – and we were escorted to a room where, in addition to the usual refreshments provided for human guests, we found a welcome pack for our dog that included toys and accessories, hypoallergenic treats, a bed and a smart food and water bowl combo. Although dogs aren’t permitted in the dining room, South Lodge guests can dine with their dogs in the Great Hall and if you’re worried about leaving your pooch in your room while you eat, pet-sitters are on hand to keep them company.
