One day, my mum came into my room, picked up a beautiful candle that had been gifted to me by a friend, smelled it and said, “This is so nice.” But she quickly changed tack once she realised it was “a man’s scent”. Suddenly, she was confused about why I liked the candle. And so, like Carrie Bradshaw, I couldn’t help but wonder… how did we get to a point in society where even scents were being gendered?
