Samra Habib grew up knowing grave danger. Throughout her childhood in Pakistan, her Ahmadi Muslim family faced threats from Islamic extremists, who considered their sect blasphemous. From an early age, she internalised the idea that revealing her identity could have deadly consequences. When her family fled Pakistan and came to Canada as refugees, Samra escaped the extremists, but was confronted with a whole new set of difficulties including racism, bullying, and an arranged marriage she did not want.
