THE GAYEST STRAIGHT BAND EVER!

›› While others took the moral high ground, Skyhooks climbed a tree for a nude centerfold. In honour of the Aussie band’s 40th anniversary, band member Bob Starkie tells all in this exclusive from Marc Andrews.

DNA: In the grand scheme of things how gay were Skyhooks?

Bob Starkie: From my observation about zero out of 10, but I could be wrong. Our original singer, Steve Hill, was bisexual.

Seventies Aussie glam rockers, Skyhooks (left to right): Freddie Strauks, Bob Starkie, Red Symons, Graeme “Shirley” Strachan, and Greg Macainsh.

The nude centrefold with Cleo magazine – talk us through that. Well, it was about the money – and not much of it. There never seemed to be much money attached to the Skyhooks experience. I put that down to management. Only three of us did it – Red [Symons], myself and Shirl [lead singer Graeme “Shirley” Strachan]. The other two took a higher moral ground. We did the shoot in a dry, barren paddock on a farm near Bendigo. There we are, naked up a dead tree, when the farmer’s wife pulls up with a ute-load of teenage girls looking for autographs!

We check out the five star living of Bali, check out the boys, beads and non-stop parties of New Orleans, hit the slopes in Queenstown for Gay Ski Week, hit the desert of Palm Springs for their White Party and hit up gay pride in Spain. We catch up with Sydney rocker Jack Colwell, find out why Adele is the biggest pop star on the planet, chat to Skyhooks legend Bob Starkie ahead of the band’s 40th anniversary and watch In The Grayscale, a new film about coming to terms with who you really are.
