GOOD OLD NEW ORLEANS

Boys, blues, beads and a party that never ends. Phillip Portman explores quirky old world New Orleans.
(This page and opposite) September, the long Labour Day weekend, is Southern Decadence – New Orleans’ gay time.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY RILEY-MCFARLANE PHOTOGRAPHY AND PHILLIP PORTMAN

IT’S AROUND 10PM on a Friday night and we’re trying to navigate the bustling crowds of New Orleans’ Bourbon Street. It’s super touristy, kind of tacky, and a little bit smelly but like nothing I’ve ever experienced. On my left there appears to be some sort of Jon Bon Jovi karaoke happening, while Snoop Dogg’s Drop

It Like It’s Hot blares from a venue to my right. Sexy college jocks are throwing beads down at people from the balconies above (During Mardi Gras they do this to get women to flash their tits) while young girls who look as if they’re from the movie sip brightly-coloured cocktails from giant fishbowls. We spot drunken bridesmaids and a soon-to-be wife on a pub crawl, fellas in business attire winding down after a busy workday, kids having what looks like the most intense deep-and-meaningful New Orleans has ever seen, and the poor trying to exchange cheap knickknacks for whatever cash they can get.

About DNA Magazine

DNA #192 is our Travel Issue. Our gorgeous cover model this month is Neighbours star Matt Wilson. Check out his sexy shoot with photographer Christian Scott inside. Matt also talks to DNA exclusively about playing gay on Australia’s most loved soap, his previous career as an aussieBum model and his advice for gay guys and girls struggling with their sexuality. Want more hot guys? Online favourite Cole Monahan teams up with Michael Dar for a racy shoot, Daniel Garofali gets down and dirty with James Demitri and we check out the hottest shots from fire island (no pun intended). #192 is our Travel Issue and we have plenty of amazing holiday pieces. We check out the five star living of Bali, check out the boys, beads and non-stop parties of New Orleans, hit the slopes in Queenstown for Gay Ski Week, hit the desert of Palm Springs for their White Party and hit up gay pride in Spain. We catch up with Sydney rocker Jack Colwell, find out why Adele is the biggest pop star on the planet, chat to Skyhooks legend Bob Starkie ahead of the band’s 40th anniversary and watch In The Grayscale, a new film about coming to terms with who you really are. We also check out The Drunk Shakespeare Society, the rise of the bromance, DNA’s diva and team give advice to a reader struggling to find love, check out the hottest looks from the Marco Marco fashion show and farewell 2015 with our year in review and why it was a massive year for gay music. Also our favourites are here, too, including Loving, Month in a Minute, Boys Toys and Urban Homo.
