Billie Eilish makes dark, disturbing, harrowing pop unlike anything else that’s come before.

Anyone who can carry off, with swagger, a decade-defining track blithely called Wish You Were Gay (written when she was 14 about a guy who turned out to be gay) definitely deserves our attention. It’s been at least a decade since there was a major break-out pop artist who keenly defined the times and seemed capable of doing just about anything. (Gaga, we’re talking about you.) Stepping up to the challenge now is 17-year-old Billie Eilish who makes dark, disturbing, harrowing pop unlike anything else that’s come before, although there are allusions to Kate Bush and Björk. It’s all framed by a keen pop dynamic, suggesting she and her team have carefully studied the aforementioned Gaga and Dua Lipa templates. The only way for Billie to go now is up!
