You can call it cosplay, costuming, or just good old dressing up. Whatever the name, it’s been fundamentally linked to the show ever since a Dalek playsuit was the Christmas gift of 1965. In the 1970s the clattering of a million knitting needles filled the air as grannies across the land turned out improbably long scarves in stripes of vaguely similar colours. The following decade even saw an official BBC pattern book, complete with instructions for anyone determined to go to school dressed as Adric. (Selfdefence lessons were sold separately.)
