A History of Doctor Who in 100 Objects...

SCORBY’S HAND LUGGAGE

As a special Christmas treat, I thought we might begin this month by tackling one of the most overlooked Doctor Who stories of all. I refer, of course, to the riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma dressed as a clown that is 1982’s eternally fascinating Black Orchid. Oh, come on. You know you love it.

3pm. Ish.

In Black Orchid’s opening TARDIS scene, the Doctor looks at the console and announces, we assume accurately, that it’s “Three o’clock, June the 11th, 1925.” With a dedication to the furtherance of human knowledge that knows no bounds, I have just checked – and guess what? June 11th 1925 was a Thursday. Now, pop me in a periwig and call me Bo Peep, but that’s a pretty odd day of the week to hold a charity cricket match and fancy dress ball, isn’t it? Doesn’t anyone have a job to go to? Madge ‘The Bitch’ Cranleigh just doesn’t give a hoot, does she? (Unlike Sir Robert, who has been known to appreciate a great one.)
