Taking a look at the latest series’ performance in the television ratings war...

Doctor Who gets a slight boost as the season concludes

After slipping to a twenty-first-century low rating of 5.61 million for Sleep No More, Episode 10 of the latest series – Face the Raven – saw Doctor Who once again back over the six million mark.

The episode attained a BARB rating of 6.05 million – a figure which includes not only those who watched on the night, but those who watched within a week of its broadcast. As usual, Doctor Who’s competition on ITV was the popular talent contest The X Factor, which had a consolidated rating of 7.65 million (plus another 0.24 million on ITV+1). BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing was top for the week with 11.77 million, while the weekly television chart was dominated by ITV’s I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, which held six positions, with every episode attracting nine or ten million viewers. As such, Face the Raven was pushed down to 30th place on the chart – the lowest position any Doctor Who episode has held this century. However, the very fact that every new episode has made the week’s Top 30 is itself a measure of how consistently successful Doctor Who has been over the past decade. Bear in mind that the Top 30 is generally made up of multiple editions of shows such as Strictly, The X Factor, EastEnders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale (plus, at this time of year, I’m a Celebrity), and it’s clear just how well Doctor Who is performing compared to the hundreds of other programmes broadcast each week. Indeed, besides Doctor Who and the regular soaps, no other drama made an appearance in the Top 30 – the next best being Casualty on 4.90 million.
