◼ Doctor Who was nominated for its 11th consecutive National Television Award in the category of Best Drama at London’s O2 on Wednesday 20 January. The series faced competition from Casualty, Broadchurch and Downton Abbey, which topped the TV chart at Christmas and ultimately won the award. Downton star Hugh Bonneville – who was also Captain Avery in The Curse of the Black Spot – gave the acceptance speech on behalf of the cast and crew. Suranne Jones (Idris in The Doctor’s Wife) won Outstanding Drama Performance for her lead role in Doctor Foster, beating Broadchurch’s David Tennant. Peter Kay’s Car Share picked up the award for Most Popular Comedy Programme. David Tennant was among those paying tribute to actor and comedian Billy Connolly, who received the Special Recognition Award – an honour which David had received last year.
