Technophobia

Investigating the new M-Pad tablet, the Doctor and Donna are led to Meadow Digital – an IT company which hides a terrible secret...

This is where it all begins.

“Technophobia is the first time we’re hearing the Tenth Doctor and Donna together on audio, so I wanted to put that at the very heart of it,” explains Matt Fitton, its writer. “I did agonise for ages about the first scene. How do you bring the Doctor and Donna back?”

The answer is: the same way the TV series would have done.

All four seasons of Doctor Who overseen by Russell T Davies as showrunner began by demonstrating the series’ possibilities: of the opening three episodes, one would be set on present-day Earth, one in its past, and one in the human race’s distant future. Big Finish’s trio of audio dramas from that period follows the same template.

Niky Wardley as Rebecca Young.

“When we knew we would have three stories with the Tenth Doctor and Donna, we knew we wanted to kick it off as that era of the TV series would kick off,” Matt recalls, “starting with a contemporary Earth season opener, very much in the mould of Rose [2005], Partners in Crime [2008], and Smith and Jones [2007]. So it’s London of the twenty-first century. It’s a couple of years in the future for Donna, but it’s recognisable to her as home. And then we have a twist to make the familiar threatening – what Rose does with the shop window dummies, and Partners in Crime with the diet pills, we kind of do with technology.”
