The Reawakening

The original inhabitants of Earth are awaking from their long slumber... and they want their planet back! How can the Doctor save the human race?

THIS ISSUE Episodes 764 & 765 – THE HUNGRY EARTH / COLD BLOOD

Despite Doctor Who usually being made in Wales, the TARDIS doesn’t actually seem to land there all that often – but that’s about to change...

“I don’t know if Cwmtaff is a real place but it might be the most Welsh place name ever,” says Will as an on-screen caption confirms the location as South Wales, in the not-too-distant future.

Night watchman Mo Northover is bidding farewell to his son Elliot and wife Ambrose before heading to work.

“A dyslexic boy and his shift-working father,” says Emma. “This gets across the social context really well.”

Mo is going to the Discovery Drilling Project, a short bike ride from home.

“Ooh. Drilling!” says Michael, already getting excited. “In a shack near a rundown row of houses. In Wales…”

Definitely not Rio.

“Yes,” says Will, who is also getting strong Third Doctor-era vibes. “I hope this is a glorious mix of Inferno and The Green Death.”

At work in the control room are geologist Dr Nasreen Chaudry and project manager Tony Mack – also Mo’s father-in-law. They’re both pretty happy, as they’ve reached their latest target.

“Ooh!” say Emma, “What a big drill! Although 21 kilometres is rather deep. Currently, the deepest shafts are all roughly 12 kilometres and fraught with all sorts of technological problems.”

The others are briefly taken aback by Emma’s sudden unexpected expertise in the area of drilling. Emma tucks her iPad down the side of the sofa.

Tony and Nasreen head off for the night, leaving Mo hoping for a quiet shift. No such luck – there’s the small matter of a minor earthquake to consider.

“A great big steaming hole in the ground. Don’t go near it!” begs Michael. Mo goes near the hole.

“Why do they never listen?” wails Emma.

The unfortunate Mo is quickly pulled under by the very earth itself.

“Love that shot of the hand going through the earth from underneath,” says Michael.

With all the action happening in Wales, it seems unlikely that the TARDIS has landed in Rio de Janeiro, as the Doctor claims.

“Amy says she’s dressed ‘for Rio’,” notes Michael, “but that’s how she’s always dressed!”
