RARE Grooves

The year’s music releases included sought-after limited editions of old favourites and lesser-known records by Doctor Who luminaries.

Perhaps fittingly for followers of a science-fiction show, many Doctor Who fans abandoned vinyl in favour of ‘futuristic’ formats long before pop music fans did.

In fairness, there weren’t actually that many vinyl releases for them to buy in the first place. Many of them seemed to prefer tape anyway, but we can only speculate about how many copies of Doctor Who: The Music and The Doctor Who 25th Anniversary Album were sold on cassette rather than LP record. As the 1980s drew to a close, it wasn’t unusual to see dealers’ tables at conventions heaving under the weight of sound effects albums they could barely give away.

Now, however, vinyl is back with a vengeance and all manner of interesting releases are finding their way into record shops. These are no idly slung-together cash-ins, though. They’re well thought-out and attractively packaged releases that any fans with a brand-new turntable would put straight at the top of their shopping list.

It’s significant, for example, that after appearing in both four- and eleven-disc CD versions, Silva Screen’s excellent 2013 compilation Doctor Who: The 50th Anniversary Collection is now available as a four-LP set, released on silver vinyl in conjunction with esoteric soundtrack specialists Spacelab9. Inevitably this has a shorter tracklisting even than the four-CD version, but some would say it benefits from concentrating on fully musical items rather than sound effects and atmospherics.
