The War Doctor VOLUME 4 Casualties of War

BIG FINISH

RRP £20 (CD, download)

RELEASED FEBRUARY

John Hurt returns as the Doctor for three more tales of the Time War, starting with Pretty Lies by Guy Adams – a story about war reporting.

“Throughout The War Doctor, [script editor] Matt Fitton has been very clever in looking at the whole of human experience of war,” observes director Nicholas Briggs, “and wars have always been chronicled in some form or another – but certainly since the Crimean War, where there were correspondents, war has been covered by notable journalists. So Matt said, ‘If we’re doing a big war story, let’s look at the press coverage of it.’”

“During the pitching process, we were all discussing war movies, and someone mentioned The Killing Fields,” recalls Guy, “and I leapt on that! For me, it wasn’t so much the notion of war reporting in a heroic sense – I really wanted to talk about propaganda, and reportage as fiction-building. I thought that that would be particularly interesting when dealing with a hero who refuses to accept that he is one, and often doesn’t act like one, because if there’s one thing that was likely to get under his skin, it’s someone trying to turn him into an icon.”
