Jago & Litefoot Series 13

It’s almost exactly 40 years since theatrical impresario Henry Gordon Jago and pathologist George Litefoot first joined forces, helping the Fourth Doctor defeat Magnus Greel in 1977 serial The Talons of Weng-Chiang. In celebration of that anniversary, the thirteenth season of the pair’s audio spin-off is going back to where it all began.

“This series gives us an opportunity to return to the events of Talons, and reflect on it in a new way,” explains producer David Richardson. “We introduce a character from the future – a Time Agent – who’s come to the Victorian era on the trail of Magnus Greel. But they’ve arrived slightly too late, and they set in motion a chain of events that will take Jago and Litefoot somewhere completely unexpected.”

“We take them to an alternative timeline, a parallel world,” elaborates director Lisa Bowerman. “They’ve got the opportunity to observe themselves from a distance. The alternative Jago and Litefoot don’t know each other, so we watch that relationship form again. We’re giving them a reason to say, ‘This is mad, and my life is in danger, but I’m actually quite enjoying this’ – it’s like watching the inception of the original partnership from Talons, in that they discover they get a buzz from these adventures.”

“It allows us to play with all these high-concept science-fiction ideas,” says David, “but really, it’s about the characters. We’re always on the lookout for opportunities to give Christopher [Benjamin, who plays Jago] and Trevor [Baxter, Litefoot] new things to play with.”

“Within the actual playing of it, they both had questions about how different they should be,” Lisa recalls. “They were thinking, ‘Should I do a different voice?’, but it’s subtler than that – they are not flipped versions, they’re just in a completely different environment. The interesting thing is how the original Jago and Litefoot react to it all – I think they’re rather mystified! The most shocking thing from Jago’s point of view is that he finds he’s got a wife in the parallel world, and she’s actually quite a firebrand!”

The premise allows for the return of two familiar voices.

“We meet the alternative Betterman and Aubrey,” nods Lisa, of the recurring characters played by David Warner and Jamie Newall. “In the parallel world, they’ve joined up and become investigators, and are playing exactly the same role as the original Jago and Litefoot, which is rather amusing. They’re like chalk and cheese in a way that parallels Jago and Litefoot themselves, which is fun.”
