First Impressions

Lost for over 40 years and now rediscovered – here are edited highlights from an audience with the great Jon Pertwee, holding court at the very first Doctor Who convention. Set your co-ordinates for a church hall in Battersea on 6 August 1977…

From the late 1970s until his death in 1996, Jon Pertwee made countless appearances at Doctor Who events, meeting many thousands of fans all over the world. Plenty of recordings of Jon’s fan-panel discussions survive, but one has remained elusive… until now: the very first dedicated Doctor Who convention, held in south-west London in 1977 and organised by the show’s fledging Appreciation Society.

Recently rediscovered, the tape is of poor quality and occasionally indistinct, but it captures a milestone: the first in-depth interview Jon gave about Doctor Who after relinquishing the title role.

Dressed in one of his original costumes – from 1974’s Death to the Daleks, since you ask – the Third Doctor fielded questions from fans alongside moderator Jeremy Bentham, who was soon to become one of Doctor Who Weekly’s founding contributors. The 90-minute conversation revealed Pertwee in his element – candid, opinionated and entertaining, touching on many aspects of his time as the Doctor.
