THE TIME TEAM A Different Side of Pertwee

Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor is renowned for being a debonair gent and a man of action. But he’s also a whole lot more…

This issue’s Time Team: Beth Axford, Christel Dee, Gerard Groves, Kezia Newsom, Zainab Sheriff

Zainab has only ever seen one Third Doctor episode (for the Time Team in DWM 529). Gerard, as a kid, bought a video of Death to the Daleks from a car-boot sale and has seen some Third Doctor stories since then. The others have seen a few more. What image do they have of Jon Pertwee’s Doctor?

“Karate and capes,” says Gerard. “Velvet and frills,” says Beth. “He’s brave, macho, strong-willed – and has fluff y hair.”

“He’s a gentleman,” says Christel. “He takes himself more seriously than his predecessors, who can be quite clownish.”

“He’s the Doctor most like a superhero,” says Kez. “He’s got a swagger.”

“That’s the word,” says Christel, nodding. “He’s James Bond. No, he’s what Austin Powers aspires to be!”

Today, however, we’ve all joined Christel and her cats Biscuit and Hope to watch three episodes that will show some extra dimensions…
