“I loved playing this character”, reads the caption under a photograph of him as the Doctor “alm ost as m uch as I loathed the politics of m aking the show.” But fans hoping he m ight dish the dirt on those politics, or detail what happened when he left the series, w ill be disappointed. “Yes, I have felt bitter, and yes, I have felt betrayed” – but about what he doesn’t say.

“I know also”, he continues, “that Doctor W ho was the best thing that, professionally, ever happened to m e… [and] these days, I feel nothing but positive about the show.” It’s the positive he shares: his respect for the w riting of Russell T Davies, w hose “energy”, “hum our” and brain like a “tinderbox of ideas” inspired his take on the Doctor.
