The end of Series 9 finale, Hell Bent [2015] features my favourite sonic screwdriver scene. The Doctor returns to his TARDIS after billions of years in the Confession Dial, dealing with the Time Lords on Gallifrey, and losing his memories and unknowingly saying goodbye to Clara Oswald. He enters the TARDIS and it lights up. It’s like the TARDIS is waking up after years of being asleep. Her dear Doctor has finally come home. The Doctor puts on his new velvet coat and the TARDIS gives him a new sonic screwdriver. He had spent the whole season without a screwdriver and was using the awesome sonic sunglasses instead. So, it is such an emotional moment when he gets a new sonic. It’s like a return to normal.

Since it has made only three onscreen appearances, my favourite sonic screwdriver design is River Song’s as featured in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead [2008] and, very briefly, The Husbands of River Song [2015]. I love that it can flash red in addition to blue, but what impresses me most is that the design is like an upgrade of the Ninth and Tenth Doctor’s variants.

I adore the new sonic, how it’s got elements from many previous iterations yet still having its own unique style. One of my favourite scenes from the show using the gadget is near the resolution of The Day of the Doctor [2013], with the Doctors walking in like they own the place, and then use the sonic to wipe the memory of the humans’ and Zygons’ identities. It’s an epic moment that gives me goosebumps every time!
