ENEMY MINE
AUDIO DRAMA
Featuring The War Doctor and Case Big Finish £19.99 (CD plus digital), £16.99 (digital only)
The new War Doctor box set picks up directly where May’s Comradesin-Arms left off – exploring the ongoing struggle between Jonathon Carley’s weary warrior and his estranged frenemy, Dalek hybrid Case (Ajjaz Awad).
There’s a pleasing symmetry to opener The Hybrid’s Choice, written by Awad herself, whereby the feisty cyborg and her erstwhile mentor undergo simultaneous therapy from unlikely counsellors. While Beth Chalmers continues to skilfully develop soldier Veklin’s softer edges, it’s the decidedly chummy Dalek Facilitator who truly steals the limelight. Nicholas Briggs voices this further extrapolation of Skarosian society, managing to imbue hilarious lines like “YOU HAVE ANGER ISSUES” and even “BRING OUT THE CAKE” with a certain dignity. After the thrilling chaos of Case’s first ‘hyper extermination’ mission, the secondary plot, concerning a trip into the past, feels a little like a comedown, yet it still affords its combined writer and lead plenty of chances to shine, as both the troubled killing machine and her younger self.
