While Shawcraft were the main contractors to the Scenic Department, a different firm was used by the Costume Department.
Jack and John Lovell of Protocol Mouldings were brought onto Doctor Who in 1964 by costume designer Daphne Dare; they were expected to service complex costume requirements and to provide props for the historical stories. For The Chase, Jack and John were commissioned to make the Fungoids and the Mire Beast. The Fungoids were made from foam rubber that was then covered with sheets of thin rubber bonded with latex; the costumes were detailed with suckers and painted green, grey and yellow. Rather charmingly, the Fungoids were nicknamed ‘Fungoid Fred’, ‘Toadstool Taffy’ and ‘Mushroom Malone’ to differentiate them in studio.
