I’m quite proud of the fact I was in Doctor Who,” Peter Purves told Doctor Who Magazine’s Richard Marson in 1987. “I didn’t enjoy the job, because the part wasn’t worth playing… But' I enjoyed the people.”
Purves’ first brush with Doctor Who involved auditioning to play a winged denizen of The Web Planet. Instead, he was cast in June 1965 as the cowboyhatted Morton Dill in the third instalment of The Chase. Remarkably, just two weeks intervened before he reappeared as a new regular, Steven Taylor, in that story’s final episode. Egged on by Maureen O’Brien, William Hartnell himself had petitioned for Purves. “I got on extremely well with Bill,” Purves recalled. “For some reason he liked me… On occasion, I kept him ever so sweet when he might have got upset, and I think we worked well together.”
