THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMEN

Director: Gerald Blake Producer: Innes Lloyd Broadcast: 30 September – 4 November 1967

The Abominable Snowmen was set among the snowy, windswept mountainsides of Tibet – home to the malevolent Great Intelligence and its hirsute robot Yeti. The budget allowed for a larger amount of location filming than was usual in 1967, but with Tibet out of the question, where should it take place?

In 1958, the Oscar-nominated feature film The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, starring Ingrid Bergman, had successfully used Snowdonia to represent the wilds of China. As a native of nearby Penmaenmawr, it’s likely that Doctor Who producer Innes Lloyd was aware of the cinematic connection and the possibilities the area offered. Consequently, the production te scheduled almost a full week of filming at the series’ furthest location from London to date, the desolately beautiful Nant Ffrancon Pass – a steeply inclined glacier valley, studded with natural rocky outcrops and rising to a height of 312 metres above sea level.

About Doctor Who Magazine

In its early days, Doctor Who was recorded on cumbersome cameras tethered to claustrophobic and often inadequate studios. The show rarely escaped these confines in the 1960s, but as technology improved, producers and directors became more adventurous. Location shooting has helped to create some of the most memorable episodes in the series’ long history. In this unique publication, new features, exclusive interviews and rare images tell the story of those episodes and the people who made them happen.
