Regenerations Revisited

Undeterred by a recent lack of new episodes, in September hundreds of fans gathered in Swansea for one of the most renowned get-togethers on the Doctor Who calendar.

It’s not often you find yourself at a bar standing next to a Dalek ordering a drink.

“I – will – have – a – pint – of – Carlsberg – please,” it rasps. But the barmaid is busy tending to someone else – me. The Mark III Travel Machine, known affectionately here as Dalek Doris, expresses its frustration in a colourful way before declaring, “I’m off to Starbucks.”

“You’re barred!” cries the lady pulling the pints, as Doris scuttles away to presumably order a frappuccino and croissant instead. It’s the last weekend of September 2016 and Doctor Who Magazine is at the Village Hotel, a homely three-star stop-off a stone’s throw from Swansea’s waterfront, at the Regenerations Doctor Who convention. It’s been the home of Regens, as its attendees fondly call it (others opt for Reggie), for most of the past eight years, and this weekend the convention is celebrating its unexpected resurrection.

Since Regens’ beginnings in the midnoughties (back then its base was Swansea’s Marriott Hotel, a few miles north from here), it’s become a must-go event for British Who fans. But in 2013 organiser Cary Woodward decided he’d had enough. “The show was 50, I was 50 – it seemed like the logical time to stop,” he tells us. His willpower cracked in 2015, however, when attending another convention as a regular punter. “Literally all weekend it was people saying to me, ‘Oh, we miss it, September was always an ideal time’, nag nag nag nag nag. In the end I gave in and said, ‘Right, I’ll do it again in September 2016!’ So here we are again!”

Yep, here we are again. For the 200 punters and the 24 guests here, it seems very much like business as usual.
