The Who Shop in East London has served fans with toys and other memorabilia since 1984. We meet proprietor Alex Loosely-Saul.

As you enter The Who Shop, there’s a TARDIS immediately on your right – a prop from the Doctor Who movies of the 1960s. On your left there’s another TARDIS in the corner, the entrance to a veritable museum of original props and costumes.

And in between the police boxes, almost spilling from the shelves, are all the Doctor Who toys and books and memorabilia you could ever dream of.

“Some people burst into tears at the sight of it all,” beams its owner, Alexandra Loosely-Saul. “For the dedicated fan it can be quite emotional. We try to keep all the lines on the shelves so you’ve got a choice. All the different types of sonic screwdriver, all the different toys new and old.”

About Doctor Who Magazine

In 1964 Dalekmania led to the birth of Doctor Who licensing, and it’s been with us ever since. The return of the series in 2005 prompted an even bigger range of merchandise, which this time invaded supermarkets as well as toy shops. In 2017 the popularity, and ingenuity, of these products continues unabated. This is the surprising story of Doctor Who toys and games – told by the people who make, sell and collect them.
