Cat Woman
Catrin Stewart talks us through Jenny Flint’s eclectic and unconventional Victorian wardrobe.
Interview by EMILY COOK
Tenny Flint is not your average Victorian lady. “She enjoys dressing up and playing the maid,” says Catrin Sewart, who played Jenny in Doctor Who between 2011 and 2014. “But actually she prefers the secret that’s underneath…”
Together with her Silurian wife Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh) and Sontaran Strax (Dan Starkey), Jenny is part of the Paternoster Gang, conducting investigations in 19th-century London and occasionally assisting the Doctor.
“She’s kick-ass and confident,” Catrin says of her character. “As the Victorian maid, what she wears is very feminine and of the period; but Jenny also really enjoys wearing combat-y stuff because there’s this tomboy side to her as well. Actually maybe it’s more genderneutral… quirky. It was really nice to be able to show these two sides to Jenny’s character through what she was wearing.”
