The top 20 Bollywood films that kept it real

THE hot trend in Indian cinema in recent years has been to make movies based on real events and people.

The most successful has been wrestling drama Dangal, which became the highest grossing Bollywood film of all-time. Eastern Eye went back through time to find the top 20 movies that have drawn inspiration in some way from real people.

20. Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008): The sparkling gem of a movie was inspired by real-life thief Devinder Singh, who was popularly known as a ‘super-chor from Delhi’. Abhay Deol played the lead role in the black comedy, directed by Dibakar Banerjee, and delivered perhaps the standout performance of his career. The movie has since become a cult classic.

19. Talvar (2015): The Meghna Gulzar directed drama is based on the notorious 2008 double murder case in Noida in which a teenage girl and her servant were found dead, with her parents being convicted of the crime. Irrfan Khan delivers a great performance as the police inspector trying to solve the complicated murder case. In fact, the movie was so effective that many thought the parents were innocent in the original case and were wrongly convicted
