Miu (Angela Bundalovic) in her ‘superhero costume’.
NICOLAS WINDING REFN’S neon-drenched, ultra-violent Drive is a defining film of the 2010s, and firmly established the filmmaker as a leading name in millennial neo-noir. Over a decade later, and with equally grisly, hyper-stylised titles like Only God Forgives and Prime Video series Too Old To Die Young under his belt, Refn’s love of the genre remains steadfast. “Noir is a celebration of the darker side of human characters — that’s where the great drama exists,” Refn tells Empire.
Yet with Copenhagen Cowboy — asix-part series for Netflix — the Danish auteur updates familiar territory with a superhero edge. The drama, in this case, unfurls across Copenhagen’s criminal underworld, as seen through the eyes of one of the show’s lead characters, the vengeful Miu (Angela Bundalovic).
