Living in tents was a reality for many railwaymen and their families in the post-World War II era, but few accounts of this experience have been published. Accordingly, ARH for February 2016 opens with Kathryn White’s account of her parents’—John and Hazel Barnard—years living in a tent at the isolated loop of Wiesmantels on the NSW North Coast Line.
Peter Fisher’s ‘On the Level’ explores the politics and engineering issues behind Victoria’s first railway level crossing on the line to St Kilda; while Jim Longworth presents an account of the Mountain High Railway in southern NSW as a tribute to the late John Dunlop. The issue rounds off with an Explorer Page item by Melanie Dennis on the article ‘Growing up with Trains’ and a book review.
