Canon RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM

Dan Mold explores this standard zoom alternative, which lacks ared ring but packs in alot of features

PRICE: £1,249/$1,099 FOCUS DISTANCE: 0.27m WEIGHT: 490g

Build and handling

The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM is a hugely welcome addition to the RF lineup. This compact zoom lens is about the size of a soda can, packs in a flexible zoom range of 28-70mm and has a wide and constant maximum aperture of f/2.8. There has had to be a compromise or two and the usual three lens rings – zoom, focus and control – have been consolidated down to two: a zoom ring and a multi-function ring, which can be toggled between AF/MF/Control via a switch on the lens barrel. Another concession is that the zoom ring has to be twisted to the 28mm mark before you can start using the lens. One great feature that it does borrow from L-series glass is weather-sealing, which isn’t something you usually see on non-pro Canon lenses.
