The cherry on top
Cherries not only offer a sweet contribution to the ‘fivea-day’ but also numerous health benefits that go far beyond the nutrients they provide us with. These properties can be enjoyed by everyone, but there are some that are particularly pleasing to runners.
Enhance exercise performance
Endurance sport research suggests that supplementing with a concentrated form of the Montmorency cherry leads to some significant benefits to endurance performance.
A 2020 research by University of Saskatchewan, Canada, analysed a series of studies that had seen people taking part in endurance events consume either a placebo or a tart cherry juice supplement before their event. The team’s analysis found that when the supplement was ingested between seven and 1.5 hours before an event, there was a significant benefit to the person’s endurance performance.
