I ’ve typically preferred doing stylised character sculpts more than anything else. A huge source of inspiration has been Arkane Studios’ art style, especially the Dishonored series. The painters they reference and the concept art they produce is always a huge source of inspiration, and I wanted to create a full character sculpt in that style.
I often focus on larger shapes, working on a unique silhouette and proportions, rather than going into extreme photoreal detail. It was a lot of fun working out all the shapes in ZBrush out of basic spheres and cubes. Usually that helps avoid producing too many similar characters that you might get from relying more on base meshes, although it definitely takes more time.
