,,ALPHA 3D BRUSHES WILL STORE A 3D SHAPE AND USE IT TO DEFORM YOUR TOPOLOGY,,
AMMUT, DEVOURER OF THE DEAD
ORIGINAL CONCEPT BY FRAN FDEZ (artstation.com/fran_fdez)
ARTIST Mike-Amir El Frangi
SOFTWARE ZBrush, KeyShot, Photoshop
I was originally contacted by OnePageRules to work on this reinterpretation of the Egyptian god Ammut, as part of their Patreon July release. This project took me around four months to complete in my free time and it was made completely in ZBrush.
One feature I mostly took advantage of was the Alpha 3D brushes that I used to create most of the scales on the
Ammut and the hieroglyphs on the different armour parts. The same way regular 2D alphas work, Alpha 3D brushes will store a 3D shape and use it to deform your topology when applying a stroke.
This allows you to add a great deal of details to any mesh by deforming the underlying model’s surface, like scales, horns and fur.
After posing the Ammut in ZBrush, I used KeyShot to render it. Multiple passes of various gold, white marble and custom materials were used and composited in Photoshop to create the final image and give it a dark yet royal feel.
