When Britain declared war on Germany in 1914 it was a common belief that the conflict would all be over by Christmas. The public would be bitterly disappointed. Over the next four years, the world witnessed a war unlike any seen before. Millions of soldiers and civilians died and those that survived were separated from their loved ones for long periods of time, never knowing if they would see them again. Staying in touch became a vital part of everyday life and postcards became lifelines for those serving abroad and those left behind at home.
