The history of space is a heroic one – it takes courage to climb aboard a rocket and head out beyond the atmosphere, especially if you’re one of the first pioneers to do so. But space exploration has other heroes apart from the brave astronauts and cosmonauts who were the first to leave the Earth. They wouldn’t have been able to do so without the pioneering work of generations of scientists who tackled the complex theories of astrophysics and the logistics of space travel, sometimes persisting in the face of condemnation and censure. In Heroes of Space, you’ll meet some of the people who have made space exploration possible. Some of them are easy to define as heroes: they took on exceptional challenges and some of them made the ultimate sacrifice. Others have more complex legacies borne out of World War II, the Cold War, and the Space Race. All of them, however, made an outstanding contribution to the scientific programmes that made humankind’s ancient dream a 20th century reality, putting humans into orbit and on the Moon, changing humanity’s view of ourselves forever, and setting us on the road to one day exploring the rest of our Solar System and maybe even beyond.
