If you think you might travel through radiation hazard areas such as compromised nuclear plants, radiation detection equipment is essential.

It’s the near future. Maybe an epidemic of the latest superflu has invaded your town. Perhaps the “big one” hit and left the entire area in shambles. Communications are spotty, and ill-prepared survivors are looking more and more desperate every day. Looting is commonplace, and the authorities are nowhere to be seen.

You reasonably decide that it’s time to get out of Dodge because there are too many people and not enough resources. You’ve stockpiled food and water, and your bug-out bags are waiting by the door.

As you leave, however, you wonder: What else is waiting for us out on the road? Do I have what I need to deal with whatever we encounter?

Chances are, you’ve considered personal protection (and I don’t mean condoms). You’ve planned well enough to pack extra clothes, a decent knife, ways to make fire and all the other items that will give you a fighting chance off the grid … .

But are you medically prepared?

In all likelihood, you’re not. In an age when the ambulance is always just around the corner, most citizens have a pretty bare medicine cabinet. But there might come a day when a pandemic, civil unrest or a terrorist attack could place you in a situation for which the miracle of modern medicine is unavailable—indeed, not just unavailable, but the circumstances might be so extreme that access to today’s technology no longer exists for the foreseeable future.

When you become, by necessity, the highest medical asset left to your family, you should prepare for some of the likely medical issues you’ll encounter. These include dehydration, infection, hypothermia, heat stroke, hemorrhage and orthopedic injuries. But that’s not all: Your travels could also expose you to smoke inhalation, burns, chemical spills or even radiation. If you don’t have the medical supplies to prevent (preferably) and treat the issues you’ll face, you’ll be less likely to succeed when everything else fails.
