If you have ever read any of my books or articles, you probably know that I am normally not a big fan of planning for one particular catastrophic event. I generally advise people to follow the path of looking at prepping and emergency preparedness in its entirety from the point of view that emergencies should be planned for by taking a broad-stroke approach.

If scientific estimates support the theory that a massive earthquake strikes your area every 400 to 600 years, and the last one that struck was 650 years ago, you might want to move the likelihood of an earthquake from the “unlikely” category to the “anytime” category.

Recently, while I was in my cabin trying to finish an article about how people in Puerto Rico have been living “off the grid” for over a year, I was reminded that the one common denominator people have when their world gets turned upside down is their need for the essentials: food, water, shelter, security and medical treatment. I’ve been teaching my “six pillar” survival concept for a long time now. Many other survival teachers have been teaching very similar survival strategies for far longer than I have, but at the end of the day, no matter how “fancily” you wrap it up, it always tends to come down to these few essential life-supporting needs.
